Boy Smarts Workshop with Barry MacDonald - Feb 7th 2014
Barry MacDonald offers lots of examples and tools in his presentation. I love that boys are given voice by this man. We are seeing an overall trend of female dominance in post secondary and as much as I am proud of females in education, our success should not come at the expense of boys.

WordPress Workshop: Building Websites - May 29th 2013
WordPress and SD8 learns workshop
Principals, teachers and secretaries got together to build their own WordPress websites with Chris, the WordPress expert. I spent the morning navigating the Crawford bay Website before settling on learning how to add a plugin for a slideshow. By the end of the workshop I was speaking "WordPress" and it was great to work together with everyone there.

Investigating Our Practices 2013 – 16th Annual IOP Conference
May 11th 2013
Professional Development for Educators
I was thrilled to take part in this conference as a co-presenter and a listener. I presented with Dan Rude about his evolving concept of emergent learning. Dan recently presented at a TEDx Talk at Selkirk College in early 2013. It is worth a watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbWD8ILxI5A
We were super excited to hear student teachers and experienced teachers alike share their ideas. We discussed the physical space of our schools and classrooms, we learned about the possibilities of self-directed learning in a kindergarten classroom. Please check out the website or contact me for more inspiring details!

Stuart Shanker April 26th 2013
Stuart Shanker and Self-Regulation
Stuart Shanker's talk was incredibly inspiring. Our entire staff went and we each came away with thoughtful minds.
His message of the potential for self-regulating students was just what we needed to hear. Especially at a time were young mind are saturated with social media, texts and technology. He spoke of the effects of video games on a young brains and he broke down the astounding statistics on Autism.
We will be reading his book as a staff and I look forward to unfolding self -regulation.

Make Just One Change by Dan Rothstein and Luz Santana
Fall 2012
Teaching students to generate their OWN questions
Make Just One Change is a fanominal read for any teacher who wants to dig deep into the process of inquiry with his or her students. I read this book as part of a book study with my staff and I was able to apply my learnings before I was even done reading this book. This book is focused on teaching students how to ask questions their own questions. The questions that students generate are deep, meaningful open-ended question that promote critical thinking. Students learn how to prioritize and rate their questions. These student-generated questions can then be use for the beginning or end of a unit or the foundation of an inquiry project. Worth the read.

Gordon Neufled May 25th 2012
Gordon Neufled and his Attachment Theory
Taking part in the Gordon Neufeld was an amazing experience and was such a great way to end my Practicum. I felt strongly connected to everything Mr. Neufeld had introduced and I incorporated a lot of what he said directly into my life. My favorite point was about building bridges and connections with students.
